Bio Tracey Durning
Tracey Durning, Executive Director
Tracey Durning is a systems entrepreneur focused on building collaborative platforms that scale capital, knowledge, networks, and influence to achieve significant social impact. Over the past decade, her private equity-like approach has resulted in the creation of philanthropic and industrial management systems to take on some of the most intractable issues of our time. As the Executive Director of Planet Heritage Foundation she manages the grant-making and impact investments portfolio, as well as builds its social enterprise startups.
In climate change, Tracey is a Co-founder and Board Member of Aligned Intermediary, an investment advisory group created to help institutional investors accelerate and increase the flow of capital investments across clean energy, water infrastructure, and waste-to-value. Since launching in 2017, AI has mobilized $200 million into direct investments, designed/launched the Climate Finance Partnership with BlackRock, Germany, France and a consortium of philanthropies aimed at accelerating clean energy investments in the developing world, and most recently began the development of a $1.5 billion climate infrastructure fund.
She is also a Co-founder and Board Member of Energy Options Network (EON), focused on advancing earlier stage clean energy technologies (i.e. innovative nuclear, fusion, geothermal, liquid fuels, ccus), and she is a Co-founder of the Electrification Coalition, a nonpartisan group of industry leaders collectively committed to transportation electrification in the US at mass scale.
In marine conservation, Tracey is a Co-founder and Board Member of Oceans 5, a global funders collaborative that seeks to protect the planet’s five oceans. The organization gives new and experienced philanthropists a platform to collectively target their assets—while also influencing collaboration amongst grantees—for greater impact and scale. There are currently fifteen Oceans 5 partners including Planet Heritage Foundation, Packard Foundation, Oak Foundation, Bloomberg Philanthropies, Waitt Foundation, the Leonardo DiCaprio Foundation, Marisla Foundation, the Moore Charitable Trust, the Angell Family Foundation, the Joy Family Foundation, the Tiffany & Co Foundation, and the Wyss Foundation.
In animal welfare, she is the Founder and former CEO of Target Zero (TZ), a nonprofit group that mentors animal shelters across the US to zero euthanasia of all adoptable cats and dogs. Profiled in the New York Times, TZ has mentored more than 21 cities and counties to ‘zero’ since 2013, with dozens more well on their way. By creating a technology platform in 2018 to replicate the hands-on mentorship, TZ was able to vastly increase its life saving efforts. As of March 2019, Target Zero became a ‘program of’ Maddie’s Fund–one of the biggest and best operational funders in the animal welfare space–in order to exponentially scale its reach and life saving efforts.
Tracey was featured in Barron’s magazine (Philanthropy: Getting the Most Bang For Your Buck) and occasionally writes about her work in The Huffington Post, The Energy Collective, and other outlets. As a former filmmaker (i.e., Executive Producer, Freedom Writers), journalist/producer (ABC News, CBS News, CNN, MTV), and pr/social media campaign builder, she often drives the communications for the initiatives she builds.
